Irrespective of where you are and what you are doing, surely, you must have pondered upon what your old school friends are up to now, but have you ever wished to go back in time and relive those carefree days of childhood? Well, last weekend I got the chance to find out when I attended my school reunion after 19 years. And let me tell you, it was a trip!

On the day of the reunion, I was both excited and nervous. I hadn’t seen most of my classmates for so many years. I wondered how they would look like, and would they still recognize me? During high school, I used to be an extremely shy kid, not so bright in studies, and always sat on last seat. I still vividly remember when I was in sixth grade and it was the day of the trimester exam results. I was late to school when everyone had been gathered at door, all pointing index finger at me (it meant one). For a second, I thought, did I come first in the exam? No, later I learnt that I was awarded single mark in one of the exam papers.

As I reached at school gate, I felt a surge of emotion. I saw some familiar faces and some not so familiar ones. Some had changed a lot; some had not changed at all. But, as soon as we started talking, I felt extremely comforted and animated to see them all together. It felt like I was younger self. These were all my friends with whom I played all the stupid games in the world, shared tiffin, and been complicit in naughty crimes.

One of the most special moments of the school reunion was meeting our old school-teachers and reconnecting with old memories. They were the ones who had shaped our minds and hearts, who had taught us valuable lessons, who had encouraged us to pursue our dreams. The whole experience felt like as if we time travelled back in time of school days. Teachers, school walls, classrooms, and benches it all made us nostalgic. We still were shy while interacting with girl classmates and we still got intimidated by teachers. We laughed at old memories, felt watery eyes when we heard teachers how overjoyed and proud they were irrespective of what we have achieved. I was so delighted to see them again and they were equally happy to see us. I felt bit heartbroken too seeing them grown old. What made it more poignant that they repeatedly expressed how happy and proud they were just to see us back in school which I did not expect at all. Could someone be so caring, so kind and so empathetic in today’s world?

The reunion was more than just a fun event. It was also a life-changing experience for me. It made me realize how precious life is and how important it is to cherish every moment. It made me appreciate how far I have come and how much I have grown. It made me reconnect with my roots and my values.

As they say “Best friends forever” school friends will always stay with you wherever you go and whatever you do they need you, you need them.
